For many students, the idea of playing at a concert feels impossible when they first start drum lessons. The first lesson is usually about simple grooves, basic coordination, and getting comfortable behind the kit. At that stage, performing live can feel very far away. But step by step, with the right guidance and regular practice, that confidence begins to grow.
Learning that leads to real performances
At Planet drum, we believe that learning music should lead to real musical experiences. That is why our students work towards live performances at our Summer and Christmas student concerts. These events are not just about showing what you can do, they are an important part of the learning process and help students gain real live performance experience.
Preparing for a concert helps students focus in a different way. Instead of only practising exercises, they begin working on full songs, thinking about structure, timing, and how to perform with confidence. It gives purpose to practice and helps students stay motivated. Knowing there is a real performance ahead often helps students improve faster.
What our student concerts are like
We hold our concerts twice a year, in the Summer and at Christmas, and students perform on a real stage with proper sound, backed by our in-house band. Playing alongside experienced musicians takes the pressure off, so even a first performance feels supported rather than exposed.
In the run-up, every membership includes a free monthly concert rehearsal, so nobody walks on stage cold. You rehearse your song properly, get used to playing it from start to finish, and arrive on the day knowing exactly what to expect.
Building stage confidence
For many people, stage confidence is one of the biggest challenges. It is completely normal to feel nervous before playing in front of an audience. Performing in our concerts helps students overcome stage fright in a supportive and positive environment, and helps them grow both as drummers and as musicians.
And if performing still feels like too much, that is completely fine: playing in a concert is always optional. Some students love the stage, others prefer to keep their playing to lessons and practice, and both are equally welcome.
How our teachers prepare you
Teacher support is a big part of that journey. We guide students through every stage, from choosing the right song to rehearsals and preparing for performance day. Our drum teachers in Islington make sure every student feels ready, no matter their level or experience.
Moving from your first lesson to your first concert is one of the most rewarding parts of learning music. It shows that drumming is not just about practice, it is about confidence, community, and real musical experiences.
