For any musician, and drummers especially, playing in a band is one of the most important things, and also one of the most rewarding and enjoyable. That's why at Planet drum, we have been running band workshops for many years, and it's one of the favourite things among our students.
Why band experience matters
Because when you play with other people, it's the fastest way to grow as a musician in a natural environment. You get to hear how music sounds in reality, surrounded by real musicians, and you experience the other aspects of music, besides being focused solely on your instrument. You learn how to listen to others, communicate, and respond to their musical cues. No book can give you that kind of vital experience. After all, for the majority of people, that is the ultimate goal of taking up drums, or any other instrument.
Another aspect of it is the communal side. There is something deeply rewarding when a group of people gathers and syncs in rhythm, you feel that you become part of something bigger than yourself.
From rehearsals to the stage
Our band rehearsals mostly focus on working on songs together during the semester, and then everyone gets a chance to perform their song live at our Summer and Christmas student concerts. This is also important in helping those who might initially experience stage fright and anxiety. Our public performances help students open up and overcome their fears.
Open to everyone, whatever your level
Our band, made up of teachers, is open to every student at any level. We are aware that mistakes are part of the process, and we adapt to everyone's level of playing, so you can join us in our Islington studios even if you don't have any experience at all. We do sessions for both kids and adults.
How to get involved
The good news is that band experience is built into membership here. Every Planet drum membership includes a free monthly concert rehearsal, so joining in and playing with others doesn't cost anything extra; it is part of being a student with us.
